Polygons

In math we have been learning about lines, line segment, rays, points, and parallel lines. We also have been working on quadrilaterals. Miss Sapatka taught us about decagons, octagons and other polygons. Decagons have 10 sides and dodecagons have 12 sides.

We have been learning about regular polygons, concave polygons and convex polygons. A convex polygon is a polygon that goes out. A concave is a polygon that caves in on itself. A regular polygon is a polygon that has 3 or more sides, not open, no curved sides and not any hanging off pieces.

Iditaread

We are doing the Iditarod in my class, but we are reading not sled dog racing. So we call it the Iditaread. We each pick out two mushers and keep their score on the trail. The Iditarod is race that started long ago when Alaska needed help because, a disease called diphtheria that was killing people. The only thing that could help the disease was antitoxin serum and the town was out, so a doctor named Dr. Welch sent out a message on the radio saying,

NOME CALLING WE HAVE AN OUTBREAK OF

DIPHTHERIA. NO SERUM URGENTLY NEED HELP

DR. CUTIS WELCH

They got a reply and it told them the nearest supply of serum was at a hospital in Anchorage 1,000 miles away across a snowbound wilderness. The Iditarod was created to remember this life saving race. Mushers compete to be the first into Nome, Alaska.

One of my mushers Ally Zirkle came in second place. Mitch Seavey came in first place. Our Iditaread ended Friday, March 22, 2013.

Nonfiction

This week I read a book called Television: What’s Behind What You See by Carter W. Merbreier. It was about how TV signal waves reach a home, how a show is filmed, and what type of programming is on at what time of day. It also shows the parts of a studio. It also tells about what type of cameras are used for what kind of scene is being filmed.
It was a fun and interesting book. You should read it some time. It has a lot of illustrations that explain about how television works. My favorite part is when they explain what kind of camera is used for what kind of scene. If you want to learn about television, this book is for you!

House on the Gulf

I read a book in reading group called House On The Gulf by Margaret Peterson Haddix. When Britt’s older brother Bran’ lands a summer job house-sitting in Florida, it seems like a great opportunity. Britt’s family moves in and Bran started acting strange. Britt and Bran’s mom is still trying to finish college and they could use the extra money. While Bran was at the Shrimp Shack every day working Britt went to Mrs.Stuldy’s house. She got a job running errands for the elderly people she lives by. When she was doing the laundry Bran’s keys fell out and Britt unlocked the closet door and found a scrap book that said “Marcus Family Album” Marcus-not Marquis. Bran got home she gave him the keys and looked at Mom’s papers and found that she was a straight A student and was Becky Marcus. When Bran got home she showed him the paper and he admitted everything. The next day Mom and Britt were about to go to the beach when Mrs. Marcus came in and Mom and Mrs. Marcus didn’t recognize each other and Britt called Bran. When everything was straightened out they found out that Bran got the wrong Marcuses. In the end Mom, Britt, and Bran moved in with Mrs. Stuldy.

I strongly think you should read this book, if you love to read suspenseful books or want to read one. This book was easy for me to make connections to. It was suspenseful when Britt, Bran, and Mom got caught living in a stranger’s house. It was also suspenseful when Bran confessed to Britt. This was so suspenseful that I wanted to read the last page before the book was over.
